Talk 1: Introduction to Practicing the Way
- First century discipleship involved a close, committed relationship between rabbi and disciple, with the goal of the disciple becoming like the rabbi in thought, word, and deed.
- To be transformed into Jesus’ likeness, it is necessary for us now, as it was for the first followers of Jesus, to intentionally imitate Jesus’ life and practices.
- We need a threefold goal: to be with Jesus, become like Jesus, and do what Jesus did.
- Contemporary discipleship involves countercultural living and practices that foster deep spiritual growth and community.
Key Scriptures: Mark 8:34-36 (denying oneself and taking up the cross); John 15:18 (abiding in the vine); Matthew 57 (Sermon on the Mount)
